Singlespeed Tutorial

How to make a Singlespeed Bicycle? 60 minutes to build up a cheap cool single speed bike!

STEP 1: First of all! BUY an old bicycle, don’t steel it!

STEP 2: Give attention to the frame-SIZE & the style of DROP-OUTS

Step 3: Prepare the tools.

Step 4: Prepare yourself. Hoody, Oakley sunglasses, green camo cap ;)

Step 5: REMOVE ALL! Maybe not the handlebar tape, will save some work.

Sure you have the right drop-outs?

Step 6: Remove the cassette

Clean all parts a bit.

More tools.

Step 7: Find your right cog size. You should use the bike for a week, allways using the same gear for the whole day, and see what ratio you need.

Step 8: Fill up the freewheel body with spacers and tighten the cog. *Spacers can be found in old cassettes or you local bicycle shop, they are different for Campagnolo or Shimano!*

Half time.

Step 9: Mount the rear wheel.

Step 10: Bring the smaller chainring to the front if you aren’t sure which ratio you need. Dont use a Biopace chainring – this won’nt work!

BStep 11: Tighten all chainring bolts very well. Maybe you will need a flat washer.

Step 12: Shorten the chain.

Step 13: Give attention to the cainline. Fixed-gear and Singlespeed hubs have a chainline of about 40-42 mm centerline of the frame/hub to center of the sprocket.

Step 14: Find the right chain tension.

Please do not forget if you haven’t the right drop-outs, you will need a chain tensioner.

Last step: assemble saddle, brakes, … Your new Singlespeed bicycle is ready, now let’s have a beer …

Let’s have a beer …
